Week 1 Awards: Lucky Ducks, Bad Beats, and One Historically Bad Bench Call

The Glory Days Gazette hands out its first hardware of 2026, and nobody asked for it.

Week 1 is in the books, and before we start pretending anyone's season-long roster construction actually matters, it's time to hand out the awards nobody wants but everybody deserves. Grab your reading glasses, or your lawyer, because some of these are gonna sting.

The "I'll Take It" Award: Lucky Win of the Week

American Idol topped Kardiac Kids, 88.76-76.8, despite posting a score below the week's average. Doesn't matter how you get there, folks — a win's a win, and American Idol will happily cash this check without asking too many questions about how it cleared.

The "You Had It Coming" Award: Bad Beat(s) of the Week

Two unlucky souls scored above the weekly average and still walked away with an L. Even Bauce Can Beat WV dropped a respectable 129.72 and still lost to Hands Holzberger's 136.36. Meanwhile, Bush League put up 123.5 — plenty of weeks that's a W — and got run over anyway by 2 Yards Under's gaudy 153.14. Fantasy football: where doing everything right still gets you nothing.

Top of the Mountain: Highest Score

2 Yards Under put up the week's best number, 153.14, which — as noted above — was also enough to be the villain in someone else's bad beat story. Efficient villainy.

Rock Bottom: Lowest Score

Stinky Bastards lived up to the name with a league-worst 75.66 points. Week 1, and already stinking up the joint.

The "Why Would You Do This" Award: Bench Blunder of the Week

American Idol — fresh off collecting the Lucky Win hardware above, because apparently the football gods have a sense of humor — started George Pickens (4.3 pts) over Jalen Coker, who sat on the bench and quietly dropped 32.8 points. That's a 28.5-point gap sitting on the pine, and American Idol still found a way to win the game. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good — and this week, American Idol was somehow both and neither at once.

Awards are based solely on Week 1 results. No stats were harmed — or invented — in the making of this column.

Forget the standings for a minute. This is the list that matters — pure points-for, no participation trophies for going 1-0 against a corpse. Some of you won and still should be nervous. Some of you lost and are still sitting pretty. Fantasy football is cruel like that.

Power Rankings

  1. 2 Yards Under — 153.1 pts, 1-0. The clear top dog in Week 1, and they know it. Everyone else is just playing for second.
  2. Hands Holzberger — 136.4 pts, 1-0. Solid, unspectacular, effective — like a punt returner who just calls fair catch every time and somehow still wins the field position battle.
  3. titysprinkles2 — 132.2 pts, 1-0. A perfectly respectable name attached to a perfectly respectable score. No notes, no roast material yet — enjoy the peace while it lasts.
  4. Even Bauce Can Beat WV — 129.7 pts, 0-1. Fourth-highest scoring team in the league and still walks away 0-1. That's the fantasy equivalent of losing a debate you clearly won.
  5. Foosball is the Devil — 127.8 pts, 1-0. Snuck a win in the middle of the pack. Not flashy, but a W is a W, even a quiet one.
  6. Bush League — 123.5 pts, 0-1. Another team that scored plenty and still lost. Week 1 apparently had a stacked slate of very good losers.
  7. Corn Shoughers — 122.5 pts, 1-0. Right in the middle of the pack, but on the winning side of the ledger — the definition of taking your win and saying nothing.
  8. BourbonBandits — 108.7 pts, 0-1. Dipped below the 110 mark and paid for it in the loss column. The bandits got robbed themselves this time.
  9. I am so SMRT, D'OH — 97.4 pts, 0-1. Under 100 points and a loss to match. Homer would be proud of the self-own.
  10. American Idol — 88.8 pts, 1-0. Somehow 1-0 with the second-lowest point total in the entire league. Simon would've sent this performance home, but the schedule-maker was feeling generous.
  11. Kardiac Kids — 76.8 pts, 0-1. Lives up to the name in the worst way — this was less "kardiac" and more "flatline."
  12. Stinky Bastards — 75.7 pts, 0-1. Dead last in scoring, dead last in the standings. At least the name is honest.

Rankings reflect total points scored this season, not record — because wins can lie, but the scoreboard never does.

Coming up next: the weekly awards column — a lighter, funnier look at the week's best and worst. Expected Wednesday morning.
