Week 5 Awards: SMRT Guys Finish First, Maye Finishes Pine-Bound
Lucky wins, bad beats, and one coach who benched a 42-point quarterback for reasons known only to him.
Week 5 is in the books, and while the standings don't lie, they sure do get awkward sometimes. Let's hand out some hardware before we get to the Power Rankings, where egos go to get humbled by math.
The "I'll Take It" Award — Lucky Win of the Week
Corn Shoughers escaped with a win over Bush League despite scoring below this week's average, squeaking by 117.6-111.62. Doesn't matter how it looks in the box score, folks — a win's a win, and Corn Shoughers will sleep just fine at 5-0 tonight.
The "Rob a Bank, Why Don't You" Award — Bad Beats of the Week
2 Yards Under dropped 146.16 points — well above the weekly average — and still lost to I am so SMRT, D'OH's 149.1. Outscoring almost the entire league and still taking an L is a special kind of pain.
Meanwhile Stinky Bastards put up a perfectly respectable 120.36 and got steamrolled anyway, falling to Foosball is the Devil's 147.74. Sometimes the schedule just hates you.
Top Score / Bottom Score
I am so SMRT, D'OH put up the week's best total at 149.1 points — turns out being smrt pays off. On the other end, BourbonBandits limped to a league-low 67.0, a number that belongs on a golf scorecard, not a fantasy one.
The "Why Even Set a Lineup" Award — Bench Blunder of the Week
Even Bauce Can Beat WV rolled with C.J. Stroud (20.94 pts) at QB while Drake Maye torched the bench for 42.46 points. That's leaving over 20 points on the table at a single position — somewhere, Maye is quietly fuming in street clothes.
Power Rankings
Blended from record, points for, and recent form — not just a gut feeling, though plenty of these teams deserve one.
- Foosball is the Devil — Top of the heap with a strong record, big scoring, and a win over Stinky Bastards that proves they're not just surviving, they're stacking wins.
- Corn Shoughers — Still unbeaten at 5-0, though their point totals and recent form say this ride might be held together with duct tape and dumb luck (see: this week's lucky win).
- 2 Yards Under — League-leading total points and the best recent form in the league, but a 2-3 record and that brutal bad beat suggest the football gods owe them one.
- I am so SMRT, D'OH — This week's high scorer and owner of the best recent form in the league. The name's a joke; the production isn't.
- American Idol — 4-1 looks great on paper, but middling points and cold recent form hint the record might be flattering them a bit.
- Even Bauce Can Beat WV — Decent scoring and form, but the Stroud-over-Maye special didn't help a 2-3 record that could easily be better.
- Stinky Bastards — Respectable scoring week in a loss, sitting right in the middle of the pack with nothing to brag about and nothing to be ashamed of.
- BourbonBandits — This week's basement-dwelling score drags down an already cold recent form. Rough stretch in Bourbon country.
- Hands Holzberger — Low points for, low recent form — the kind of team that makes you check if they're still fielding a full roster.
- Bush League — Winless at 0-5 after this week's loss to Corn Shoughers. The name is starting to feel less like a joke and more like a prophecy.
- Kardiac Kids — 1-4 and cold, with little in points or form to suggest a turnaround is imminent.
- titysprinkles2 — Bottom of the blend with weak points for and the second-worst recent form in the league. Rock bottom has a view, apparently.
Power Rankings blend record, total points, and recent form (weighted 9% at Week 5, climbing toward a 25% cap later in the season). Rankings reflect the order above only — no editorializing on the math, just the vibes.
Coming up next: the weekly awards column — a lighter, funnier look at the week's best and worst. Expected Wednesday morning.
